Due to its rich oil field, we could smell Luling before entering the city limits as we visited from nearby Lockhart. It was however the chicken and cattle slaughterhouses that provided my family income. My parents and 3 older siblings emigrated from Durango Mexico in 1970. As immigrants, with little to no formal education and unable to speak English, menial labor was their only option. I came along as the 5th child in 1971 and since childcare was out of range to our meager income, I joined my mother at work in a building that still stands a mere 50 feet from our current location.
As a 4-year-old boy, well behaved and happy to stay close to my mother, I would watch as she performed her work. The sight of an unborn calf getting expelled through a shoot and slapping loudly onto the concrete slab that was my mother's workspace is a visual that is forever etched on my mind. I wasn't afraid or concerned in the least because she was there, us together in the "Killing Room".
Fast forward 35 years, as owner of a renovation business, I am looking for a showroom space and 637 E. Davis, Luling, TX becomes the option that makes the most sense. As I am planning how to organize the space and prep it as a showcase of the work my team does, my mother comes for a visit. As she walks around 'inspecting' as mothers do, she asked "Do you remember I would bring you to work when you were little?". After only a few prompts, the memories came flooding back then she proudly said, "And now my son is buying the corner building."
In 2020 I moved my showroom and decided to use this building as a place where I could pursue my soul's true passion: love of music. I was not able to learn music as child, but latched onto it at 19 giving myself access to whatever I could as time went on to listen, learn, play, practice and collaborate. My efforts culminated in this space where I gladly welcome you: "The Killing Room".
